History of National Blueberry Pancake Day

Pancakes have been around since the Stone Age around 30,00 BC. In fact, a preserved man named Otzi the Ice Man was found in ice. He was at least 5,000 years old and was so well-preserved that researchers found pancakes in his stomach!

Pancakes have gone by lots of different names, like flapjack, johnnycakes, griddle cakes, hoecakes, or hotcakes. The first pancakes were made from mostly flour and milk, and they were more like biscuits than what we have now.

Today, our pancakes are lighter and fluffier because we usually add milk, eggs, butter, and baking powder. Flavoring was added by the English, although the ancient Greeks and Romans in 600 BC used to put in some honey and a bit of curdled milk.

Blueberries are added to pancakes in order to provide extra vitamins and nutrients like copper, vitamin K, fiber, manganese, and vitamin C. Blueberries are also rich in antioxidants, and they can lower blood pressure, improve insulin response, and reduce cancer risk.

Blueberries are one of nature’s superfoods for health. In fact, they’re the one of the very few native North American fruits that we still eat today. So add some on top of your pancake, too, not just inside of it!

When you put blueberries directly into the batter and mix them in, then it makes the pancakes turn a blue/green hue. If you want to avoid that, just drop a few blueberries onto the pancake right when you put the batter on the hot griddle.

In 1445 in the United Kingdom, some people celebrate Shrove Tuesday (a holiday right before Lent) with annual pancake relay races.

Later in the 1880s, several inventions made it possible to harves, process, and transport maple syrup more easily, which caused its popularity to increase tremendously.

Blueberries were only grown in the wild until the early 1900s when a farmer and a botanist were able to finally domesticate them in gardens. Not only were they used in recipes, but they were also used for cosmetics and alcohol.

Then in 1931, General Mills invented the first boxed mixes of bisuit and pancake dry ingredients, which made making pancakes even more simple! This gives people more time to experiement with different ingredients, like blueberries!
