History of National Banana Cream Pie Day

As a whole, pies date back to around 6,000 BC with the ancient Egyptians. These pies were free-form and filled with honey. Over time, people began filling these pies with meat or fruit.

In the 1600s, the pilgrims from Europe brought their favorite fruit pie recipes with them to America. Ingredients were short supply, so the European women began using round pans to make the pies go as far as possible.

The following century – the 1700s – saw pies being served with every meal in America. As the country expanded and grew, pies became regional.

It wasn’t until the 1900s that cream pies – pies filled with custard – began to be popular. In the 1950s, American soldiers stated that their favorite pie was banana cream.

The custard in cream pies is made with milk, flour cream, and eggs. It’s very similar to the cream ptisserie, which is the main part of most French tarts.

In England, banana cream pie is called Banoffee pie (a combination of bananas and toffee). This recipe is extremely rich, consisting of condensed milk and toffee. It is usually served with ice cream.
