Free Comic Book Day (1st Saturday in May)

Free Comic Book Day (1st Saturday in May) is one of those days that actually feels worth showing up for.

It’s not just about picking up something free (although that helps), it’s the atmosphere. Local comic shops get busy, people queue up early, and there’s a mix of kids discovering comics for the first time and long-time fans hunting down specific issues.

If you’ve never been, it’s a surprisingly easy one to try. No planning needed, just turn up and see what you find. It’s also one of the more genuinely fun weird holidays in May.

When is the Holiday?

It takes place every year on the first Saturday in May. Upcoming dates include:

  • May 2, 2026
  • May 1, 2027
  • May 6, 2028
  • May 4, 2029
  • May 3, 2030

It’s always worth checking your nearest comic shop ahead of time, as some run extra events or limit how many comics you can take.

Who Invented It?

The idea came from Joe Field, who owned a comic shop in California. He noticed how much attention superhero movies were getting and suggested a day where shops could give away comics to bring new readers in.

Publishers like Marvel Comics and DC Comics backed the idea, and the first event launched in 2002. It stuck pretty quickly.

The History of the Holiday

Free Comic Book Day didn’t start as anything big.

It was basically a shop owner trying to get more people through the door, and it worked better than expected. The first one was in 2002, tied in with a Spider-Man release, which definitely helped with the crowds.

After that, it just… stuck. Shops kept doing it, publishers kept printing special issues, and now it’s one of those days people actually plan for, especially if they’ve got a good local store.

It still feels a bit like a promotion, but in a good way. More like an excuse to show up than anything overly organized.

Fun Facts About Comics

  • A lot of people think comics started with superheroes, but they were around long before that. Newspapers were running comic strips years earlier, just in a much simpler format.
  • Superman turning up in 1938 is usually the moment things shifted. After that, everything got a bit bigger, louder, and more dramatic.
  • Not all comics are fast reads. Some graphic novels are genuinely long, and you end up reading them more like a regular book than flicking through.
  • Manga can throw people off at first because you read it the “wrong” way (right to left), but kids tend to pick it up quicker than adults.
  • Old comics can be worth a ridiculous amount, but most people only find that out after they’ve already thrown them away at some point.

If you’re not heading out anywhere, this is an easy fallback.

The comic-style coloring page keeps the theme going without needing anything else, and it works well for kids who like the look of comics but aren’t sitting down to read a full one yet.

Activities to Celebrate

If you’ve got a comic shop nearby, go early. Not because you have to, but because the good stuff does go quickly, and it’s one of the few days where those shops actually feel busy.

If you’re staying home, making a comic strip is one of those things that sounds simple but ends up taking longer than you expect. Kids usually start with one idea, then suddenly they’re adding more panels, changing the story, and getting oddly invested in it.

If you’ve already got comics at home, swapping them works better than you’d think. Even just trading with one other person can introduce something completely different that you wouldn’t have picked yourself.

Dressing up is optional, but even something small (a mask, a t-shirt, whatever you’ve got) makes it feel a bit more like an “event” rather than just another day.

And if you do go to a shop, it’s usually worth buying something small while you’re there. The free comics get people in, but those places don’t run on free.
