History of National Word Nerd Day

We just can’t find the words to explains the history of Word Nerd Day. Literally – we have no clue when this weird holiday first began being celebrated.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the official definition of word is: a speech sound or series of speech sounds that symbolizes and communicates a meaning usually without being divisible into smaller units capable of independent use.

Words can be communicated verbally or visually (with writing). Words have been around since mankind began walking the earth and communicating with one another.

Throughout history, stories and ideas were typically communicated orally. The written word and the ability to read was left to religious leaders and members of the higher classes. It wasn’t until the middle of the 1700s that reading and writing became accessible to the general population.

The first dictionary was written in English by Dr. Samuel Johnson and was published in 1755. Since then, the written word has become one of the core foundations of civilizations across the world.
