History of Send a Card to a Friend Day

Sending cards to a friend is something that has been done since ancient times.

The Chines and Egyptians would send elegant messages on different types of paper.

Later, during the Rennaisance (1400s), greeting cards began to be sent for different types of holidays throughout Europe.

Then in Victorian times (1800s), the greeting card was used even more for birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and other holidays. In the 1860s, publishing companies began large-scale production of greeting cards.

In 1910, Joyce C. Hall founded Hallmark, which is the oldest and largest card manufacturer in the United States.

Before the internet, greeting cards were used regularly to express gratitude, birthday wishes, and even to just let someone know you were thinking of them.

While a text or an e-card (developed in 1995) is thoughtful, there’s something special about getting a physical card in the mail, which is what this day is all about.
