National Houseplant Appreciation Day (January 10)
One weird holiday on January 10 is National Houseplant Appreciation Day. Check out the other random January holidays!
History of National Houseplant Appreciation Day
National Houseplant Appreciation Day was established by The Gardener’s Network. They wanted an official opportunity to recognize the benefits of houseplants, especially after the holidays when all of the decorations were taken down.
Around 500 BC, houseplants were only used by wealthy families on their rich estates as decoration pieces. Servants were hired to maintain these plants. In the 1600s, the idea of having conservatories and greenhouses was written about by the agricultural expert Sir Hugh Plant (perfect name, right?!) in his book “The Garden of Eden.”
Then in the 1800s, the terrarium was developed which allowed plants to be transported across the ocean, making it much easier to get plants from other cultures and climates.
In 1989, NASA published a study that showed plants may improve the air quality for indoor spaces. Every elementary school student knows that plants turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. Some plants are better than others at helping with that.
Plants also release moisture into the air, conditioning it with refreshing humidity that can actually make your house feel cooler! What’s more, many houseplants are easy to care for and have an array of household uses that help you save money.
Household plants are also great for their therapeutic value. They can help lessen symptoms of depression, anxiety, and dementia. They can also improve productivity and performance in the workplace and in school.
